Simon Thew - Full Biography
Simon Thew (Conductor) 2009-2010
Kate NealSimon Thew gained a Masters Degree majoring in Conducting from the Sydney Conservatorium of music in 2005. While a student, Simon was Assistant to the Head of Orchestral Studies/Lecturer in Conducting, and as a result conducted all major ensembles at the conservatorium. Simon has worked with many orchestra's including Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria, Sydney University Symphony Orchestra, Penrith Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonia, Sydney Youth Orchestra and has been on the conducting staff of the SBS Radio and Television Youth Orchestra since 1997, currently holding the position of "Conductor in Residence". In 2007 Simon was awarded the Dame Joan Sutherland-Richard Bonynge Travel Scholarship from the Australian Opera Auditions Committee. Simon has conducted the highlights of Opera for the AOAC in 2008 and 2009.

Simon has studied in Vienna, Berlin and Barcelona. Simon's conducting teachers and mentors include Sebastian Weigle, Nicolette Fraillon, Harry Spence Lyth, Richard Bonynge CBE AO, and John Hopkins OBE.

Simon has been an assistant conductor with Opera Australia- Australian Premiere Season of A Streetcar Named Desire (2007), La Boheme (2008). In 2008 Simon was the musical intern at the Richard Wagner Festival in Bayreuth- Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.

Simon was awarded the 2010 Hephzibah Tintner Fellowship. Simon's fellowship year has seen him working with The Australian Ballet, Opera Australia and the Sydney Symphony. Highlights include Silver Rose, Coppelia, Halcyon, The Edge of Night, Nutcracker, the Opera Australia New Years Eve Gala, Bliss, Sonnambula, the Oz Opera Tour of La Traviata and many concert programs
